What is Telsem(ጠልሰም)

ጠልሰም ማለት አምሳያ፣ ተምሳሌት ፣ ቅርጽ ፣ ሐረግ፣ የክታብ ጽሁፍ ማለት ነው። ጥንታዊ የኢትዮጵያ የሥዕል ጥበብ አይነት ሲሆን ለህክምና፣ ከተያየ በሽታ ለመፈወስ፣ ከተለያዩ መናፍስት ለመጠበቅ የሚጠቀሙበት ነው።

Telsem(ጠልሰም) is a geez word which is translated as symobl, shape or illustration. It is an ancient and traditional Ethiopian art technique also used for different purposes such as: healing, protection and therapy.

Similar to “Talisman” it is ascribed with religious or magical powers intended to protect, heal or harm individuals for whom they are made. It could be applied in different ways including through herbal preparations, in the form of Kitab(magical scroll), by making nksat(tatoos) on the body or by creating Telsem(symbol or design ) on the façade of houses.
